A busy weekend for the U11’s!

The weekend started with the Mini Pitmen attending the Rhymney Valley U11’s trials. 10 of the U11’s turned up and they put on a fantastic display, really doing the club proud. Every player did their absolute best to showcase their talents. There is a second trial next Saturday 16th September, and fingers crossed, the boys will continue to play well a get selected. Good luck boys!

On Sunday, the Mini Pitmen travelled to St Albans for a round robin with St Albans and Rhiwbina.

The Mini Pitmen first faced Rhiwbina. Both teams fronted up well. Handling skills from both teams were also excellent and by half time the scores were tied at 5-5. In the second half, both teams continued the high tempo play, as in the first half. A few handling mistakes and turnovers gave Rhiwbina the edge and they soon ran in several more tries. The Mini Pitmen had plenty of opportunities to break away and score, but there seemed to be a lack of confidence when it came to taking on the opposition players 1 on 1. We had our chances, but it wasn’t to be. However, a hugely improved performance on last week, which is fantastic to see.

Final score: Rhiwbina 30-5 Penallta.

Try scorer: Cai Wardman

In the second game we faced St Albans. Last season, St Albans took the spoils, with a convincing win, due in part to a couple of speedsters in the team. This season, the Mini Pitmen kept them quiet with a solid defensive display. The Mini Pitmen tackled like machines, giving St Albans nowhere to move. They also started to get their mojo back, scoring some fantastic and well deserved tries. This was a very good performance from the young Mini Pitmen, and one in which will boost their confidence no end.

Final score: St Albans 5-15 Penallta.

Try Scorers: Harvey Watkins, Evan Burridge, Haydn Butcher.

Our player of the week this week goes to Haydn Butcher, for his impressive handling, direct running and solid defence. Well done Haydn and the rest of the Mini Pitmen!
